Jennifer Lee Magas is an award-winning public relations educator, strategist, and teacher-practitioner with 30 years of experience in higher education, public relations, journalism, crisis communication, media relations, social media, strategic communication, and professional writing. She joins Northeastern University’s College of Arts, Media and Design (CAMD) as Professor of the Practice in Public Relations, bringing expertise in experiential learning, media law, digital communication, reputation management, ethical artificial intelligence, and career-focused communication education.
An alumna of Northeastern, Magas earned her M.A. in Technical and Professional Writing with a focus on legal writing and received the Provost’s Awards for Outstanding Teaching and Writing as a graduate assistant in the Department of English. She also holds a B.A. in Literature and Creative Writing from Fairfield University and a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School, with a concentration in higher education law and employment law.
For more than 20 years, Magas has served as co-owner and vice president of Magas Media Consultants LLC, a public relations agency specializing in media relations, media law, crisis communication, financial services PR, social media, professional writing, and media training. Her previous professional experience includes employee relations, policy communication and management training for a global commodities trading corporation with approximately 9,600 employees across the United States and Canada.
Magas has developed more than 30 undergraduate and graduate courses across in-person, online and hybrid formats and has mentored thousands of interns and students through campaign work, professional writing, portfolio development, and career preparation. She has held leadership roles on Public Relations Society of America boards and committees, speaks regularly at academic and industry conferences, and remains actively engaged in the profession. Her expertise has been featured in more than 300 articles and blogs, including The Wall Street Journal, U.S. News & World Report, TIME, Newsweek, The New York Times, and Ragan Communications. Returning to Northeastern is both a professional and personal honor, and Magas is excited to come home to the university that helped shape her as a writer, educator, and practitioner – and to proudly join the CAMD community.
