Josephine Ross

Josephine Ross builds spaces where learning becomes participatory, creative, and deeply human. An applied theatre artist, educator, and researcher, she works at the intersection of performance, community engagement, and education to design experiences that invite people to make meaning together rather than receive information passively.

Ross is currently pursuing a PhD in Interdisciplinary Arts, Media, and Design at Northeastern University, where she serves as a Graduate Assistant with the Data Theatre Collaborative. Her work explores how theatre can function as a tool for civic dialogue, data literacy, and collective decision-making. Through projects that bring together universities, municipal institutions, artists, and community members, she investigates how performance can transform data and lived experience into shared understanding.

As Theatre Coordinator at Hyde Square Task Force, Ross develops theatre programming for hundreds of Afro-Latin youth and leads collaborative projects that bridge communities and institutions. Her practice centers young people as artists, researchers, and knowledge creators, supporting them in telling stories that reflect their experiences and aspirations. She has also designed and facilitated theatre-based educational initiatives with partners including Tufts University School of Medicine, Harvard Project Zero, the American Repertory Theater, Boston University, Emerson College, and numerous community organizations.

Known for her energetic, relational, and interdisciplinary approach, Ross has presented her work nationally, including keynote performances and conference presentations focused on community-engaged arts practice, youth leadership, and applied improvisation. Whether directing original bilingual productions, facilitating data theatre workshops, or researching the role of performance in learning, she approaches theatre as both an artistic practice and a method of inquiry.

Through her work, Ross seeks to create conditions where people can listen differently, learn collectively, and imagine new possibilities for themselves and their communities.
