Music Director for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
Kimberly Piper is a Boston-based pianist, accompanist, choral director, and music educator with over 25 years of experience working with singers of all ages. This is her first show with Northeastern University’s Department of Theatre and she is very grateful for the opportunity.
Her teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that all singers can learn and grow, refining their skills through collaboration and hard work. Her passion for music and enthusiasm throughout the rehearsal process is what makes the rehearsal room a second home; giving singers a robust musical experience where they can feel confident to take risks in a sage and supportive environment. In addition to performing, Ms. Piper has been the choral director for students in grades 4-12 in the Melrose Public Schools since 1999, and has built a program of youth and secondary choirs consisting of over 350 singers. Her students have performed at Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney World, and TD Garden and have performed with Yale University’s A Cappella group the Society of Orpheus and Bacchus, the UNH Chamber singers, and several other collegiate groups.
In addition to choral directing, Ms. Piper has extensive experience as a musical theatre director and pit orchestra musician and has performed in over 30 musicals. Recently, Ms. Piper had the opportunity to serve as the music director for the Summer Theatre Intensive at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts, and has worked with community groups such as the Wakefield Repertory Theatre, Concord Platers, Needham Community Players, Theatre Company of Saugus, and the Off-Broadway Players. She is also the pianist for the Melrose Symphony Orchestra, has taught vocal music ensembles at the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Days in the Arts program at Tanglewood, and has served as an accompanist for several touring choirs and soloists throughout New England as well as internationally.
Most recently, Ms. Piper was selected to perform as a member of the Boston Pops Gospel Choir with the Boston Pops Orchestra as part of their 30th anniversary for Gospel Pops Night, sharing the stage with the Grammy award winning group Take 6. Ms. Piper holds a B.M. in Music Education and Performance from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, an M.Ed. from Lesley University, a post-graduate certificate in Counseling & Psychology from Lesley University, and post-graduate coursework in Vocal Pedagogy, Piano Pedagogy, and Alexander Technique from the Eastman School of Music – University of Rochester, NY.
When not performing, Ms. Piper enjoys spending time with her family, reading, walking, traveling, and practicing yoga.
