Lecturer – Art, Fundamentals
Born and raised in NYC, Julia Hechtman is a visual artist who works with a variety of media. She received her MFA in Photography, Film, and Video from University of Illinois at Chicago, and her BFA in Photography from Syracuse University. Hechtman’s work has been shown both nationally and internationally, including solo shows in Chicago at devening projects + editions and group shows at Robert Miller Gallery in NYC; Underline Gallery in NYC; The Worcester Art Museum in Worcester, MA; The Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, NH; The deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, MA. Her videos are part of the Video Data Bank’s collection in Chicago, Illinois and have been screened recently in London’s 52nd Film Festival. She has been an artist-in-residence at Oxbow in Saugatuck, Michigan; at Sydney Olympic Park in Sydney, Australia; and most recently, at Nes Artist Residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland. After years of teaching in Chicago at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and University of Chicago, Hechtman moved to Boston and opened Proof Gallery in South Boston. After two years of co-directing the gallery, she decided to dedicate her time solely to teaching and the production of her own artwork.
