As artificial intelligence has developed rapidly, research into the ethical implications of its development, deployment and use has expanded across disciplines and institutions. The research team examined a corpus of 7,076 documents from the JSTOR repository and used computational network analysis to investigate relationships among authors, publishers and topic keywords. An interactive visualization allows researchers to explore these relationships.
The analysis and visualization reveal a fragmented AI ethics research ecosystem, with distinct communities organized around areas such as technology and digital media, philosophy and science, learning, AI and defense, health and economics, and ethics and business. The work demonstrates how computational network analysis and visualization can map interdisciplinary research fields and contribute to philosophical inquiry by making the relationships, structures, and divisions within a large body of literature visible and explorable.
