Bridging Algorithmic Literacy Gaps

Algorithmic literacy—the ability to understand how algorithms curate and distribute information—is essential for safeguarding user autonomy, fostering public dialogue, and upholding democratic values. However, algorithmic literacy remains unevenly distributed, with seniors (65+) being the least literate demographic. Unlike younger generations who have grown up with digital technology, older adults face a steep learning curve, often struggling to critically assess algorithmically-curated information. As a result, they may be more vulnerable to misinformation and face challenges in making informed decisions in the digital landscape.

This project seeks to address this digital inequality by developing a user-friendly app prototype designed to enhance algorithmic literacy among seniors. Building on CfD Bridges Fellow Myojung Chung’s preliminary research on algorithmic literacy gaps (Chung, 2024; Chung & Wihbey, 2024)1 and her current collaboration with the Harvard Berkman Klein Center’s Applied Social Media Lab—where she is developing an algorithmic literacy app for youth—this initiative will create an interactive, accessible, and engaging digital tool tailored to the needs of older adults.

Leveraging the expertise of Chung’s mentoring collaborator, Dr. Miso Kim, who specializes in designing for older adults, this project will integrate cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions of algorithmic literacy to develop a more comprehensive framework. The ultimate goal is to empower seniors with the knowledge and skills necessary to confidently navigate algorithm-driven information ecosystems by designing an app that prioritizes accessibility for seniors, who often have specialized needs in terms of interfaces and content.
