Travelers increasingly seek ways to take control of their travel experiences. However, advancing technology and multiple interconnected systems make for increased complexity and difficulty for travelers to navigate diverse transportation modes. In particular, transfers within airports need to be improved, prioritizing the passenger experience and increasing service quality.
An important aspect to consider is the level of empowerment passengers perceive and enact during travel. To provide a better and more empowering service, we need to understand what travelers look for and what they evaluate in their airport experience.
This project aims to foster traveler empowerment in airport transfers through collaborative design workshops. The research team developed a theory-based empowerment framework applied to the traveling experience and created a design workshop series in which participants reflect upon and collectively derive design criteria to improve the airport experience for travelers. Some of our research questions included: 1) specific requirements for travelers to feel empowered; 2) values sought after for empowerment in transportation; and 3) the role of information accessibility.
