Testimonials

Data and Graphics Journalist
Los Angeles Times (Los Angeles, USA)
“The biggest benefit of this program for me was dedicated time to develop technical and problem solving skills rooted in design but that can be applied to many different fields. I have also found that learning how to provide feedback, self-critique, and iterate is crucial to collaboration in demanding environments. In addition to the department’s supportive and experienced professors, there are opportunities to explore other disciplines across the University. For myself, working with the journalism department was key to getting where I am today.”

Senior User Experience Designer
Blizzard Entertainment (Irvine, USA)
“I can’t recommend the IDDV program at Northeastern University enough! I learned so much from this program, and it really helped me build my career as a Senior UX Designer. The focus on information hierarchy and design theories was a game-changer for me, and I still use what I learned every day in my job. If you’re thinking about a design career, this program is a fantastic choice to set you on the right path!”

Lead Product Designer
Flatiron Health (New York, USA)
“As an international student, the [IDDV] program gave me access to tools, courses, and professional networks that completely shifted my professional outlook as a designer and the types of projects I could conduct. Not only did I strengthen my design skills, but I was also able to build my coding and stats skills, and I had the opportunity to engage in co-op-like opportunities at leading institutions like the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Near the end of my program, the faculty supported me through a directed study so I could engage in very specific projects, which signals the willingness of the program to be flexible and accommodate individuals’ goals. The program also gave me access to a very special community of data visualization practitioners. Eight years later, I still maintain connections to some of the professors, as well as some of the designers from my cohort.”

Senior Designer
Microsoft (Seattle, USA)
“My time at Northeastern University was truly transformative. Pursuing a Master’s in Information Design and Visualization provided me with invaluable tools and skills I never anticipated gaining. I vividly recall a conversation with a hiring manager at Microsoft where I asked what stood out in my portfolio. He shared that my portfolio was the most unique among all candidates, it went beyond apps and website designs, showcasing a deep understanding of how to organize and present information effectively, alongside innovative projects that demonstrated a breadth of expertise. To this day, my ex-manager often talks about how fascinated he was with the project I worked on at Northeastern University, which left a lasting impression.
The work I produced at Northeastern, including my thesis, directly contributed to landing my role as a UX designer at Microsoft. Courses like Experience Design, Visual Communication and Concept Mapping continue to shape the way I approach challenges in my workplace to this day, especially in the age of AI – it set me up for success! The professors at Northeastern are not only exceptionally knowledgeable but also incredibly supportive and encouraging, fostering an environment of growth and creativity. I am grateful for my time here and for becoming part of this community!
I cannot recommend this program enough. For anyone looking to master the art and science of information design, this course is a game-changer.”

Data Visualization Researcher & Faculty

“The IDDV program was life-changing. I gained skills in design and coding to create impactful visualizations, learned from top experts, and became part of an inspiring community. The faculty’s support, even years after graduation, continues to shape my career and approach to information design and data visualization.”

NUVis
The Northeastern University Visualization Consortium (NUVis) is an interdisciplinary cross-university initiative to support the university’s research efforts in visualization and to connect faculty, researchers, and students across campus to foster a visualization community. Northeastern University’s interdisciplinary focus and structure is an ideal environment for such an interdisciplinary field of study, and the goal of NUVis, funded through a collaboration between the College of Arts, Media and Design and the Khoury College of Computer Sciences, is to continue to foster and grow this important area of research.
