Professor Yu (far right) with Dialogue of Civilization students

Professor Shuishan Yu is leading a Dialogue of Civilizations in China this summer. The students will spend the first part of the trip in Beijing and will then travel to the Linxia and Gansu provinces. They will wrap up their trip in Shanghai but not before spending time at the Giant Panda Rescue Center in Chengdu. Below are images from the trip thus far with notes from Professor You about their travels and experiences.

During the first week of the Chinese Culture and Architecture Dialogue, we had lectures on Chinese art and architecture, artist demonstrations of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy, and a lecture at the Central Conservatory of Music, where the students also visited the musical instrument collection to try some their hand playing the ancient instruments.

During the orientation day, we tried out the Beijing subway system and went to the National Museum on the east side of the Tiananmen Square, passing by Zhongnanhai, the “White House” of China. The student to got a special opportunity to dine with one of our Chinese students at a group dinner in his home, which is very close to the Olympic Park.

We also visited the Capital Museum then went to a tea house where three Tea Masters performed a Chinese-style tea ceremony for our students. The students then tried to make and serve tea during the tea ceremony.
