Theatre

The Department of Theatre at Northeastern University is decidedly different than most university theatre programs. With opportunities for experiential learning on both our New York City and Boston campuses, we offer distinctive opportunities for pre-professional artistic training and the development of durable skills that transfer across industries.

In a moment in which AI disrupts many traditional pathways to white-collar careers, a theatre education at Northeastern is well positioned to train young adults for an AI-resilient future in which you:

  • capture and keep attention with charismatic presentation and storytelling skills
  • solve concrete, out-of-the box problems in creative ways, delivering public-facing solutions on a fixed timeline and budget
  • collaborate generously and build powerful relationships that can sustain them both personally and professionally

In Boston, we integrate performance, technological innovation, and academic inquiry; our theatre making generates new knowledge and new possibilities. Through both our Theatre BA/BS and distinctive interdisciplinary combined theatre majors, we translate the skills and knowledge we generate through theatre across domains and industries, lay the foundation of art as ethical responsibility, and prepare you for a rich professional life, with vital and employable skills such as creative problem solving, active collaboration, and deep empathy.

In 2026-27, Northeastern University merges with Marymount Manhattan College, combining its legacy of rigorous training in theatre and dance with Northeastern’s established approach to experiential learning and career-ready education. In New York, we offer BFAs in musical theatre, acting, theatre design/technology/stage management, and dance, and BA/BSs in theatre (with concentrations in directing and writing for the stage) and dance (with concentrations in dance and media; teaching dance arts; and body, science, and motion).
